Our journey continues

Last night we left from Sri Sailam Mallikaarjun Temple taking the night bus of 7.30 pm. to Kurnool. We had expected that we would reach max by 1.30 am. at Kurnool. However to our dismay there was a huge traffic jam (probably it been a long  weekend ) thus we were  stuck in a traffic jam for more than an hour. It was almost 3 am when we reached Kurnool. Imagine our plight getting down in a town where there is hardly any activity at night and upon that we have to scout for a hotel room. We hired an auto and went to a hotel where we had decided to put up for the night (I had selected this hotel while checking on google but we did not do the booking as were not sure whether we will be able to leave Sri sailam or may have to spend the night at Srisailam. ( we were not sure as to how long it would take us for the darshan at Mallaikaarjun temple). Unfortunately, when we reached the hotel all gates were closed and no one was answering our phone call, dejected we hailed another auto and managed to find a hotel just next to the bus stand. Though not a great place but for us spending next few hours was more important. Our original plan was to reach Kurnool from Srisailam by 2am. take a nap and leave by 7. Lekin yeh ho na saka because it was almost 4 am when we check in the hotel. we took a quick nap and were all set to go by 9 am. As our hotel was attached to the bus stand thus in no time we were at the bus stand. There are regular buses to go to Alampur, so within 15 minutes the bus arrived and in an hour time we reached Alampur bus stand. Jogulamba temple is at a walkable distance from the Alampur bus stand ,so we walked up to the temple clicking pictures and enjoying the local ambience.

As we were nearing the temple I was fascinated to see the  group of  ancient temple  gradually appearing in front of me. I grasped and utter in sheer delight that finally I am at Jogulumba temple. All thanks to my friend Pratik who initiated this trip with me. So guys tighten your seat belt to know more about this group of temple.

Just next to the parking area the row of temples that I saw were all Shiva temple, starting from left to right the temple is

  1. Vishwa Bramha
  2. Veera Brahma Temple
  3. Arca Brahmma

The intricate carvings on the walls of these Shiva temple left me spellbound. We spent some good time before moving on to Jogulumba mata temple.

Jogulumba Temple, Alampur

Shree Jogulamba Temple

Nestled on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the quaint town of Alampur, the Shree Jogulamba Temple stands as a testament to both architectural brilliance and spiritual serenity. My visit to this ancient temple left me captivated by the divine aura, rich history, and the tranquil surroundings that make Alampur a hidden gem for seekers of both religious and cultural experiences.

A Historical Prelude:

Alampur, often referred to as the ‘Dakshina Kashi,’ is renowned for its group of temples, among which the Shree Jogulamba Temple holds a prominent position. Dedicated to the fierce incarnation of Goddess Shakti, Jogulamba, this temple is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas, signifying the places where body parts of the goddess fell. Jogulamba temple is regarded as a Shakti Peetha where Sati Devi‘s upper teeth fell. The divine significance coupled with the historical grandeur intrigued me as I stepped into the sacred premises. We entered the gate to another complex which was on the right side of the group of Shiva temples that we visited above. We removed our shoes at this gate  and moved inside. The first temple that we saw was  Sri Bala Brahmeswara Swamy Temple and walking little ahead we reached  Sri Jogulamba Ammavari Temple and next to that is Svarga Brahma Temple and Vira Brahma  temple.

Architectural Marvels:

The architecture of the Shree Jogulamba Temple reflects the Chalukyan style, transporting visitors to a bygone era. The intricate carvings, majestic pillars, and the sacred sanctum exude an aura of mysticism. As I marveled at the craftsmanship, it became evident that the temple was not just a spiritual center but also an artistic masterpiece that stood the test of time. Luckily for us there were not many devotees so in 15 minutes we were able to have darshan.

Meeting Jogulamba: The Fierce Mother Goddess:

The primary deity, Jogulamba, is revered as a fierce form of Goddess Shakti. The idol is uniquely adorned with a crown of skulls, depicting the goddess’s relentless nature in protecting her devotees.   In this temple Goddess Jogulamba is seen seated on a corpse with scorpion, frog, and lizard on the head .The sanctum radiates a powerful energy, inviting devotees to seek blessings and solace. The rhythmic chants and the fragrance of incense added to the surreal atmosphere, creating a space for introspection and spiritual connection.

Exploring the Temple Complex:

Beyond the main sanctum, the temple complex encompasses several shrines dedicated to various deities, each with its own significance. The Nava Brahma temples nearby are a fascinating addition, showcasing the architectural finesse of the Chalukyan dynasty. As I wandered through the complex, the spiritual vibes and the ancient charm of Alampur embraced me, creating an immersive experience.

Riverside Serenity:

The temple’s location by the Tungabhadra River enhances its allure. A stroll along the riverbanks offered a tranquil escape, with the sound of flowing water complementing the peaceful ambiance. The picturesque surroundings provided a perfect backdrop for reflection and contemplation, allowing us to connect with nature and spirituality simultaneously. Infact we couldn’t resist clicking our pictures along the river front. We would have loved to spend some more time here absorbing the beauty of the place , however our tight travel schedule was forcing us to move away from this pleasant moments.

Local Flavor and Hospitality:

Alampur, though a small town, offers a warm welcome to visitors. The local cuisine, featuring authentic South Indian flavors, provided a delightful culinary experience. Interacting with the locals revealed a deep-rooted pride in their cultural heritage and a willingness to share stories that added layers to my understanding of the region. Talking about stories we were informed by the local that we can visit Papanaasni Temple, Initially we thought it was at a walkable distance but soon realised that its bit far, hence we hired an auto. As we were running short of time, we were in two minds whether to visit or not, we were worried that we do not miss our bus back to Kurnool because we had to reach Mantralayam by late evening.

Alampuram Papanasi Temples

Alampuram Papanasi Temples are a group of twenty three Hindu temples dated between 9th- and 11th-century that have been relocated to the southwest of Alampuram village in Telangana. This cluster of mostly ruined temples are co-located near the meeting point of Tungabhadra River and Krishna River at the border of Andhra Pradesh. They are about 1.5 kilometers from the Alampur Navabrahma Temples of the Shaivism tradition

Our experience  of the temple

This temple was very neat and clean , everything looked so symmetrical, we quickly moved around various temples in the complex, clicking pictures. ( I think I will have to visit this place again because the traveller in me feels this visit was too short and quick). We were almost running when we came out of the temple, We jumped into our Auto and were soon  speeding across as we had a bus to catch, we were late and to our dismay we saw our bus on the road and believe me it was a scene straight out of the movie scene as our auto guy sped full speed , screeching to a sudden  halt in front of the bus and just like a movie stars we got down from auto and boarded the bus. Boss Aisa apna travel style hai!

My visit to the Shree Jogulamba Temple in Alampur was more than a pilgrimage; it was a transformative journey into the realms of spirituality and history. The blend of ancient architecture, divine energy, and serene surroundings made this trip an unforgettable adventure. Alampur, with its rich cultural tapestry and spiritual resonance, is undoubtedly a destination that transcends time, inviting travelers to explore its hidden treasures and connect with the divine essence that permeates its sacred grounds.
